S02E08: Dallas Kashuba (DreamHost) – Real Innovation NEEDS FREEDOM, NOT FUNDING

Guest: Dallas Kashuba

Dallas Kashuba is a co-founder of DreamHost and since it started during his college years it’s really the only job he’s ever had. He has appeared on NPR’s All Things Considered and on MSNBC’s The Beat with Ari Melber to talk about data privacy and the role a hosting company plays in that. He’s also a longtime music producer and DJ, and some of his original music was used in this episode.

How has DreamHost stayed independent for over 25 years? Can privacy and open source still give hosting an edge? Does creativity matter more than capital in the long run? And what keeps a founder-led company relevant in a commoditized industry?

My guest is Dallas Kashuba, co-founder of DreamHost, one of the few large hosting companies still fully bootstrapped and founder-led. Dallas shares how “follow the fun” became a business philosophy, why privacy and open source still define their DNA, and what hosting providers must understand to stay relevant in the age of AI.
